For more than 55 years, Master Shaper, Dale Velzy, has been designing and shaping innovative and sometimes radical surfboards and racing paddleboards.  He's made boards for the beginning surfer as well as boards for some of the most creative and advanced surfers - some of whom went on to become international champions.

Over the years, Velzy has continued to explore and refine the dynamics of surfboard design.  He reasoned that the most radical surfing in the most critical part of the wave was - back in the pocket, deep in the curl - not in front of it.  With this in mind, he envisioned a board that would allow powerful turns and cutbacks, aggressive vertical moves with no hang-ups, and a board that could be finessed deep in the curl and still have the down the line speed to make the wave.  The result was the MALIBU EXPRESS -

a design which Velzy considers the proudest achievement of his career.

The Express is quite possibly the most unusual longboard you've ever seen.  Take a look at it.  Think about it.  Do the lines make sense - the plan shape, the rocker, the bottom, the rails?  Can you imagine how it works?  If it fits in your imagination, you can make it fit in the curl!

Velzy is fully aware of the tradeoffs that must be considered in designing an extremely light-weight, high performance surfboard.  Extreme light weight can be realized only be sacrificing structural strength and durability.  Velzy wants his boards to work but he also wants them to last more than one season in the water.  Although his custom boards can be ordered with the denser and slightly heavier Clark light blank, he recommends the super light for the Express.
